The Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal

The entry point to the Panama Canal's Atlantic entrance channel has been moved north. Distances for routes through this area may have changed slightly.

Changes in the Gulf of Mexico

Routes in the vicinity of Dos Bocas and Cayo Arcas, Mexico have been adjusted to better respect local pilotage and restrictions. Distances for routes transiting this area may have changed.

Additionally, routes to Ciudad del Carmen, Mexico and to installations in the Cantarell oil field have been adjusted to respect restrictions on how the oil field is approached. Distances to/from these locations may have increased by up to 62 M (but most routes are not so significantly affected).

Changes to oilfields in the South China Sea

Due to the addition of new oil installations, routes have changed in the vicinity of Xijiang, Huizhou and Lufeng Terminals, in the South China Sea. Distances for routes to/from these terminals or transiting near to them may have increased by up to 7.5 M.

Prompted by these changes, a review of the route network in this area was carried out, and distances for certain routes may consequently have been reduced.

The approach to Male, Maldives

The approach to Male has been revised. We now use Bodu Kalhi, as Gaadhoo Koa is now closed to all shipping.

Port approaches reviewed

Following review, approaches to the following ports have been amended to comply with local piloting regulations. Distances to/from these ports may have changed by a small amount.

  • Shantou, China (and also the nearby LPG terminal)
  • Shenzhen, China and other nearby ports (distances for routes to/from these ports may have changed by up to 3 M)

  • Wenzhou, China
  • Yangshan Deep Water Port, China
  • Yingkou, China

In addition, minor changes have been made to approaches to the following ports, either prompted by review or due to the release of updated charts or other information in Notices to Mariners. Distances to/from these ports may have changed by a small amount.

  • Adang Bay, Indonesia (due to the addition of a new oil installation)
  • Balikpapan, Indonesia (due to the addition of a new oil installation)
  • Bandar Taheri, Iran
  • Caldera, Chile
  • Dongshan, China
  • Haldia and Kolkata/Calcutta, India (in addition, the distance between these two ports has increased by approximately 14 M, because following review a different route is now favoured)
  • Huangpu Old Port, China
  • Hudiksvall, Sweden
  • Las Palmas, Canary Islands
  • Port Bonython, Australia and other nearby ports
  • Port du Verdon, France
  • Risavika, Norway and other nearby ports
  • Sauda, Norway
  • Shidao, China
  • Shoreham, United Kingdom (due to the construction of an offshore windfarm)
  • Thorshavn (Tórshavn), Faroe Islands

Other sea areas reviewed

Minor changes have been made to the route network in the following sea areas, either prompted by review or due to the release of updated charts or other information in Notices to Mariners. Distances for routes transiting these areas may have changed by a small amount.

  • Dogger Bank, in the North Sea (due to the addition of a new oil installation)
  • Valdemar Oilfield, in the North Sea
  • The area around Murmansk, Russia
  • The Gulf of Mexico, south of LOOP terminal (clearances of oil installations have been improved)
  • Parana River, Argentina
  • The area around Fremantle, Australia
  • Kangan Gas Field, Iran
  • The area around Tombak LNG Terminal, Iran
  • Kanmon Straits, Japan
  • The area east of Hokkaido, Japan (local traffic schemes are now better respected)
  • The area west of Lantau Island, Hong Kong SAR
  • Dangan Channel, south of Hong Kong Island (routes have been adjusted to better respect the traffic scheme)
  • East of Po Toi Islands (near Hong Kong) and southwest of Guangao, China (due to new wrecks being added to charts)
  • Humen Strait, China
  • The area around Jingtang, China (clearances of oil installations have been improved)
  • The area east of Dong Ying, China (clearances of oil installations have been improved)
  • The traffic scheme near Yangshan Deep Water Port, China
  • The area around Panyu Oil Terminal, in the South China Sea
  • Coronation Bank, South China Sea (due to the addition of a new oil installation)

Other minor changes

The following changes may have caused distances to change by a small amount, or in some cases they may have caused large changes but to only a small number of routes.

  • The route from Tauranga to Los Angeles has been improved upon review.
  • Approaches to Dneprovsko-Bugsky and Nikolayev, Ukraine now follow the marked channel more closely.
  • Observation of the traffic separation scheme at the mouth of the Hugli river has been improved.
