When routing to or from Mogadishu (Somalia) please ensure that Anti-Piracy Routing is turned off. It makes no sense to have it turned on when using Somalian ports as it's aim is to avoid Somalian waters.

<br />
Both PortToPort and the Online Distance Tables updates include extended Anti-Piracy Routing to avoid high risk waters off the coast of Somalia and enhanced Pilot To Pilot distances.

Distances within Sulphur Emission Control Areas (SECAs)

We will shortly be releasing a software application designed to advise you of the distance within Sulphur Emission Control Areas (SECAs).

BORIS - SECA Scanner will be available as a no-cost add-on to users of our Online Distance Tables or PortToPort software.

If you would like to participate in the final testing cycle before the application is released please Contact Us. We will be restricting the number of users taking part so if you are interested, please let us know as soon as possible.

Knowing the distance steamed within these areas will help you more accurately estimate bunker costs as low sulphur fuels carry a cost premium.

Currently, two SECA areas are in force, the North Sea and Baltic zones. Work on implementing the new "Regulated California Waters" is in progress and will be included when it comes into effect. As and when further areas are implemented, future updates to the software will support them.

Piracy Attacks Off The Coast Of Somalia

PIRACY ATTACKS OFF THE COAST OF SOMALIA

With the recent upsurge in piracy attacks off the cost of Somalia, we have been doing some work on routes avoiding the most troublesome areas.

Should you wish a “Round the Cape” distance to or from the Arabian Gulf passing to the EAST of Madagascar then ADD 247 miles to the distance obtained from the Distance Tables.

We are monitoring the situation and should it deteriorate further will add the ability to get routes passing to the East of Madagascar to an interim release of the tables. If you wish us to do this sooner rather than later please email support@atobviac.com and request this change.

The most significant change is the addition of two new routing points to control routes passing between the mainland of China and Hainan Island. These two routing points control East and West bound access to the strait and are open by default, closing them will force routes to pass to the South of Hainan Island. It should be noted that the port Haikou lies within the Hainan Strait, to the West of the new routing points.

Distance Tables Update (1.0.6.108)

Seasons Greetings and a Happy New Year to all our subscribers past, present and future.

The end of December 2007 release of the Distance Tables (Build 1.0.6.108) is now available for users of our PortToPort software and Online Distance Tables.

Access to Terschelling Routeing

Amendments have been made to the Tables to allow controlled use of the Terschelling Routeing to those vessels not constrained to use the Mandatory Route for Tankers from North Hinder to the German Bight. (See the latest edition of IMO ‘Ships’ Routeing’)

Two Routeing Points have been established in the two traffic lanes Off Vlieland which are used to control access into the Terschelling Route. These Routeing Points are NOT closed by default and are also linked to the ENV/NAV/Routeing control as there are regulations that apply to their use.

Users wishing to obtain distances between Southern North Sea ports and German North Sea ports or Baltic port via the Terschellinger or Off Vlieland routeing should turn off ENV/NAV/Routeing and then select the appropriate Advanced routeing point to obtain the desired routeing.

NB. Tanker based users should amend their default routeing to ensure that the Terschellinger routing points are NOT enabled.

Navigation in the Baltic West of Gotland

The transit routes used through the Baltic use the Deepwater Route off Gotland as the default route for a vessel of 13.0m draft as the separation scheme off Gotland has a draft restriction of 12.0m. Navigation to the west of Gotland is allowed by opening the Routeing Point ‘West of Gotland’ in the Advanced Routeing area.

The Web based distance tables have been altered to expose these routeing points. The PC based software already had the West of Gotland routing point and the latest release of the tables exposes the Terschellinger routing points
